🌲 Monteverde Cloud Forest
Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of Costa Rica’s most magical destinations. Perched high in the mountains, this mist-covered reserve is famous for its unique cloud forest ecosystem, where cool mountain air meets tropical rainforest to create an environment unlike anywhere else in the country. The almost constant blanket of cloud gives the forest an enchanting atmosphere and supports an incredible diversity of plants and wildlife.
Nature lovers travel from around the world to experience Monteverde’s remarkable biodiversity. The reserve is home to more than 400 bird species, including the spectacular Resplendent Quetzal, one of Central America’s most sought-after birds. Along the forest trails you may also spot sloths, monkeys, coatis, colourful frogs, butterflies and countless orchid species, making every walk a wildlife adventure.

Monteverde is also renowned for its adventure activities. Walk across hanging bridges high above the rainforest canopy, fly through the treetops on exhilarating zipline courses, or explore the forest after dark on a guided night walk to discover creatures rarely seen during the day. The area’s cooler climate also provides a refreshing contrast to Costa Rica’s warmer lowland rainforests.
The small mountain town of Santa Elena serves as the gateway to the cloud forest and offers a wonderful selection of eco-lodges, boutique hotels and cosy mountain retreats. Visitors can enjoy locally grown coffee, delicious restaurants and breathtaking mountain views while experiencing Costa Rica’s strong commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism.
Whether you’re hoping to photograph the elusive quetzal, immerse yourself in pristine nature or simply enjoy one of the world’s most remarkable cloud forests, Monteverde is an unforgettable destination and one of the true highlights of any trip to Costa Rica.
