Malta

Set in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is a fascinating island nation where thousands of years of history meet crystal-clear seas, honey-coloured limestone cities and a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Despite its compact size, Malta offers an incredible mix of ancient temples, impressive fortifications, picturesque fishing villages and vibrant waterfronts, making it an ideal destination for both short breaks and longer holidays.

My first visit to Malta was during a Mediterranean cruise, with Valletta providing a spectacular welcome as our ship sailed into one of Europe’s most beautiful natural harbours. The historic waterfront around the port immediately impressed me, with its magnificent stone buildings rising above the Grand Harbour and the city walls creating one of the most dramatic cruise arrivals I’ve experienced.

I joined a bus tour to explore more of the island, but unfortunately the weather had other ideas! Heavy rain meant I didn’t see Malta at its very best, but even then it was easy to appreciate the island’s rich history, beautiful architecture and welcoming atmosphere. Sometimes a destination simply deserves a second visit—and Malta is definitely one of those places.

Today, I’d love to return and spend several days exploring at a slower pace, wandering through Valletta’s historic streets, discovering the medieval city of Mdina, relaxing beside the coast and experiencing more of the island’s fantastic food and culture.

Gozo – Malta’s Peaceful Sister Island

Just a short ferry journey from Malta lies Gozo, an island renowned for its slower pace of life, scenic countryside and dramatic coastline. While I haven’t visited Gozo yet, it’s firmly on my travel wishlist.

Gozo offers a completely different atmosphere to Malta, with quiet villages, rolling hills, hidden coves and spectacular coastal scenery. Visitors can explore the impressive Citadel in Victoria, swim in crystal-clear waters, discover ancient temples and enjoy some of the Mediterranean’s best walking and diving opportunities. It has a reputation for being one of the most relaxing islands in the region, making it the perfect complement to the history and energy of Malta.
