Bolivia Rail Journeys

Bolivia’s railways offer a unique way to experience one of South America’s most dramatic landscapes. While the country no longer has an extensive passenger rail network, several routes remain, taking travellers across the vast Altiplano, through remote desert scenery and into regions rich in indigenous culture and history.

One of the most famous journeys is the train from Oruro to Uyuni, crossing the high-altitude plains before arriving at the gateway to the spectacular Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat. Many travellers combine this rail journey with a guided 4×4 expedition across the salt flats, colourful lagoons and volcanic landscapes.

In eastern Bolivia, the Ferrobus connects Santa Cruz de la Sierra with Puerto Quijarro on the Brazilian border. This comfortable overnight journey passes through tropical lowlands and provides an alternative to flying, making it popular with travellers continuing into Brazil.

Bolivia’s trains are less about luxury and more about the adventure of travelling through remote landscapes that few visitors experience. They are often included as part of wider South American itineraries, combining Bolivia with Peru, Chile, Argentina or Brazil.
