Peaches were introduced to Georgia centuries ago, but the state’s commercial peach industry really began to develop during the 19th century. Georgia’s warm climate and suitable growing conditions helped peach farming flourish.

One of the most important figures in Georgia’s peach-growing story was Samuel H. Rumph, a grower from Marshallville who developed the famous Elberta peach in the 1870s. The variety was particularly well suited to shipping, helping Georgia’s peach industry expand beyond the local market.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Georgia had developed a strong reputation for producing high-quality peaches, and the nickname “The Peach State” became firmly associated with Georgia.

Today, the peach remains an important part of Georgia’s cultural identity. You’ll find peaches featured on everything from road signs and souvenirs to artwork, food products and local celebrations.

Peach County, located in central Georgia, was established in 1924 and takes its name from the fruit.

Interestingly, Georgia isn’t the largest peach-producing state in the USA today. But that doesn’t diminish the peach’s importance here — it has become a symbol of Georgia’s agricultural heritage, Southern character and hospitality.

Look out for fresh Georgia peaches when they’re in season, along with peach preserves, pies, cobblers, ice cream and other local treats.
