🇱🇮 Discover Liechtenstein
Tucked between Switzerland and Austria in the heart of the Alps, Liechtenstein is one of Europe’s smallest countries — but its tiny size hides an impressive variety of experiences. Dramatic mountain scenery, pretty Alpine villages, castles, hiking trails, museums and excellent food can all be enjoyed within a remarkably compact area.
The capital, Vaduz, is the natural starting point. Wander through the town, visit the Museum Mile, see the famous Vaduz Castle perched above the valley and explore the vineyards and viewpoints overlooking the Rhine Valley. The Liechtenstein Trail is another great way to experience the country, linking all eleven municipalities over 75km.
For mountain scenery and outdoor adventure, head into the Alps to Malbun, Liechtenstein’s mountain resort. In summer it offers hiking and spectacular panoramic trails, while winter brings skiing, snowshoeing and winter walks. Malbun is around 30 minutes from Vaduz by car or bus.
Is Liechtenstein a standalone holiday?
Yes — but think short break rather than a traditional week-long holiday.
The official tourism organisation suggests that 24–48 hours can give you a good introduction, while three days allows considerably more time to combine Vaduz, the mountains, hiking, culture and food.
For an active traveller, I’d suggest 2–3 nights. That gives enough time to explore Vaduz and spend a day in the mountains without rushing.
🚆 How do you get there?
Liechtenstein doesn’t have its own airport or a mainline railway station, but that doesn’t make it difficult to reach.
The easiest approach for many UK travellers is to fly to Zurich, then travel by train towards Sargans or Buchs in Switzerland, before continuing by LIEmobil bus into Liechtenstein. Feldkirch in Austria is another useful rail gateway.
That actually makes Liechtenstein particularly attractive for a multi-centre European rail adventure.
