🐋 Why Visit The Whale in Andenes, Northern Norway?

The Whale in Andenes is set to become one of Northern Norway’s most fascinating new attractions. Opening to the public on 4 June 2027, this spectacular knowledge and experience centre will explore the world of whales, the Arctic Ocean and our relationship with the sea through a combination of science, art, storytelling, sound and architecture.

Located beside Andenes Lighthouse on the island of Andøya, The Whale is surrounded by the dramatic scenery of Vesterålen and Northern Norway. The building itself is designed to work with the landscape, creating an experience that begins before you even step inside.

🐳 More Than a Museum

A visit to The Whale is about much more than looking at exhibits. The experience brings together whale research, art, storytelling and interactive installations, helping visitors discover more about these remarkable creatures and the environment they inhabit.

Allow around 1.5–2 hours to explore The Whale, with an audio guide available to help you discover the exhibitions at your own pace.

And because Andenes is one of Norway’s best-known destinations for whale watching, you can take the experience even further by combining your visit with a whale-watching safari on the Arctic Ocean.

🌊 Explore Andøya and Vesterålen

The Whale can easily become part of a wider Northern Norway holiday.

Explore Andøya by road and follow the spectacular Andøya Scenic Route, discover the fishing communities and landscapes of Vesterålen, or continue your journey towards Lofoten or Tromsø.

For something completely different, visit during the summer and experience the Midnight Sun, or plan a winter adventure combining The Whale with the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.

✈️ How Do You Get to The Whale?

Andenes can be incorporated into a Northern Norway itinerary in several ways.

You can fly from Tromsø or Bodø, travel by road through Northern Norway, use bus connections from destinations including Tromsø, Narvik, Lofoten and Sortland, or include Andenes as part of a wider self-drive adventure.

It is also possible to combine a visit with a Hurtigruten or Havila coastal cruise, although The Whale is not directly beside a coastal cruise port. Instead, we would recommend adding time in Andenes as part of a pre- or post-cruise land extension.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Northern Norway Experience for All Ages

The Whale is designed to welcome visitors of all ages, making it an interesting addition to a family holiday, couples’ adventure or multi-generational trip to Norway. The centre is also accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

Whether you’re fascinated by marine life, love extraordinary architecture, enjoy wildlife experiences or simply want to explore somewhere a little different, The Whale offers another reason to venture north.

The Whale doesn’t have to be a standalone attraction.

Imagine combining The Whale and whale watching in Andenes, dramatic Arctic scenery, the Lofoten Islands, Tromsø, a Norwegian coastal cruise, the Midnight Sun or Northern Lights into one tailor-made adventure.

Combine it with whale watching, explore Andøya by road, add time in Vesterålen or Lofoten, experience the Midnight Sun in summer or chase the Northern Lights in winter — and suddenly The Whale becomes part of a much bigger Northern Norway adventure.
