🚆 Sleep Your Way Across Europe: The New Brussels–Milan Night Train

A new way to travel from Belgium to Italy has arrived — and this time, the journey is part of the adventure.

Imagine boarding a train in Brussels in the evening, settling into your couchette, watching Europe disappear into the darkness… and waking up the following morning in Italy.

That is now possible thanks to European Sleeper’s new Brussels–Milan overnight service.

The new route officially launched in September 2026, creating a direct overnight connection between Brussels, Switzerland, Lake Como and Milan.

And we think this is exactly the sort of journey that deserves a place on your travel wish list.

🌙 When does the train run?

The current 2026 timetable has Brussels → Milan departures on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with the return Milan → Brussels service running Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The journey is designed to be taken overnight, meaning you can make the most of your travel time rather than losing a day to airports and transfers.

For example, a current Brussels departure leaves in the evening and arrives in Milan the following morning.

That’s one of the things we love about sleeper trains:

Board in the evening. Sleep through the journey. Wake up somewhere new.

🌄 And there’s a bonus…

You don’t actually have to travel all the way to Milan.

The service also provides access to some wonderful destinations along the way, including Lugano and Lake Como.

Imagine combining a European city break with a few nights beside an Italian lake — without having to fly between destinations.

🛏️ What is the train actually like?

This isn’t a conventional daytime train where you simply try to sleep in a seat.

European Sleeper offers different ways to travel, including seats, couchettes and sleeping accommodation.

The Classic couchette compartments have seats during the day which are converted into beds at night, with compartments available as shared or private accommodation. Bedding and mineral water are included, and breakfast can be added.

There are also Comfort compartments for travellers looking for a little more space and privacy.

For solo travellers, there’s even the option of Women-Only compartments in Classic accommodation.

💶 How much does it cost?

Fares vary depending on the date, accommodation and availability, but shared Classic accommodation starts from €49.99 one way per person.

Private compartments are also available for couples, families and groups.

As always with rail travel, booking early is sensible if you want the best choice of dates and accommodation.

🇬🇧 What about travelling from the UK?

This is where it gets particularly interesting for British travellers.

You can travel by Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels, then connect with the overnight European Sleeper.

That means your adventure can begin in London and continue all the way to Italy without boarding a plane.

It’s a fantastic option for travellers who enjoy slow travel, rail journeys and making the journey itself part of their holiday.

European Sleeper also recommends allowing plenty of connection time when joining the night train from another European service.

🚆 And it’s getting even better…

The route is set to change again from 13 December 2026.

The new timetable will add calls at Antwerp, Breda and Eindhoven, creating even more possibilities for travellers joining the service.

And that’s one of the reasons we’re keeping a close eye on European sleeper trains.

The map of Europe is changing — and travelling by train is becoming an increasingly exciting way to explore it.

🐸 Our take

This is exactly the kind of journey we love at Discover the Frog.

It’s not simply about getting to Milan.

It’s about boarding a train as the sun goes down, settling into your compartment, travelling through several countries while you sleep and waking up somewhere completely different.

You could spend a few days exploring Brussels, take the night train south, stop for a few days around Lake Como or Lugano, continue to Milan — and build an entire European adventure around the journey.

Because sometimes the journey isn’t just part of the trip.

It is the adventure.
