Georgia Real Food Adventure – My April Adventure 🇬🇪

Discover Georgia through its food, culture and unforgettable landscapes.

In April, I joined Intrepid Travel’s Georgia Real Food Adventure, an eight-day small-group journey that took me beyond the usual tourist trail to discover the real flavours and traditions of this fascinating country.

Starting in the vibrant capital of Tbilisi, the adventure combined historic towns, spectacular mountain scenery and fascinating cultural encounters with plenty of opportunities to experience Georgian hospitality.

From exploring Tbilisi’s atmospheric Old Town and bustling markets to discovering the charming streets of Signagi and Telavi, every stop offered something different. I experienced local food traditions, explored the beautiful Pankisi Valley, and travelled into the Caucasus Mountains, where the magnificent Gergeti Trinity Church provides an unforgettable backdrop.

Of course, food is at the heart of this adventure! From traditional Georgian khachapuri and handmade khinkali dumplings to local specialities, market visits, cooking demonstrations and tastings, this is a wonderful way to discover a destination through its culinary heritage.

What makes this journey particularly special is the opportunity to connect with local people, learn about regional traditions and experience places you might not discover on a conventional holiday.

The Places That Made Georgia Special 🇬🇪

Georgia is a country of striking contrasts, where ancient churches overlook mountain valleys, colourful old towns hide fascinating stories, and remote communities preserve traditions passed down through generations. Here are some of the places I discovered during my April journey.

Georgia’s capital combines historic architecture with a lively, contemporary atmosphere. Wander through the narrow streets of the Old Town, admire the distinctive balconies, explore the area around the sulphur baths and take in panoramic views from the surrounding hills. Tbilisi is a city best explored on foot, with something interesting around almost every corner.

Overlooking the Alazani Valley, Signagi is one of Georgia’s most picturesque towns. Its cobbled streets, pastel-coloured buildings and old defensive walls make it a lovely place to wander, while the surrounding countryside provides beautiful views across the Kakheti region.

The regional centre of Kakheti, Telavi offers a glimpse of life beyond the capital. Its streets, traditional architecture and lively market provide an insight into the region’s character, while the surrounding countryside is known for its agricultural traditions and historic estates.

Surrounded by green hills and mountain scenery, Pankisi Valley offers a different perspective on Georgia. Home to the Kist community, the valley has a distinctive cultural identity and a fascinating heritage. It is a rewarding destination for travellers interested in learning about communities and traditions that remain largely outside mainstream tourism.

Overlooking the Aragvi River reservoir, Ananuri Fortress is one of Georgia’s most striking historic landmarks. Its stone towers, churches and carved architectural details sit against a dramatic landscape of blue water and distant mountains, making it a memorable stop for history lovers and photographers alike.

The journey north into the Caucasus reveals a completely different side of Georgia, with winding mountain roads, deep valleys and towering peaks. Stepantsminda is the gateway to this spectacular region, while nearby Gergeti Trinity Church occupies an extraordinary mountainside position beneath Mount Kazbek. The views alone make this part of the country worth discovering.

One of Georgia’s oldest cities, Mtskheta is rich in religious and architectural heritage. Jvari Monastery sits high above the meeting point of two rivers, while Svetitskhoveli Cathedral dominates the historic centre. Together, these landmarks offer a fascinating insight into the country’s long history and spiritual traditions.

Discover Georgia for Yourself

From historic towns and ancient monuments to peaceful valleys and dramatic mountain landscapes, Georgia offers an incredible variety of places to explore within one relatively compact country.

My April journey revealed just how rewarding it can be to venture beyond the familiar and discover somewhere with its own distinctive character.
