New York’s Iconic Plaza Hotel to Close for Four Years
One of New York City’s most legendary hotels is preparing to close its doors in January 2027 for an extensive restoration project. 😱🏙️
If you recognise The Plaza Hotel from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Great Gatsby or the much-loved Eloise books, this famous Fifth Avenue landmark is about to enter a new chapter.
When will The Plaza Hotel close?
The Plaza is scheduled to close to hotel guests from 20 January 2027, with restoration work expected to take at least four years. If everything goes to plan, the hotel could reopen in 2031. Its final day of service is currently scheduled for 19 January 2027.
Why is it closing?
The project will focus on repairing and restoring the hotel’s historic, landmark-protected façade. The scale and complexity of the work mean that keeping the hotel operating during construction would be impractical.
Further details about the restoration are still being developed, with the work needing to meet strict historic preservation requirements.
A New York legend
Since opening in 1907, The Plaza has become one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, overlooking Central Park at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street.
Its famous appearances in films and literature have made it a destination in its own right. From Kevin McCallister’s unforgettable stay in Home Alone 2 to the glamour associated with The Great Gatsby, The Plaza has secured its place in popular culture.
The hotel is also renowned for its elegant interiors and afternoon tea at The Palm Court.
