Why Visit Egypt?
Egypt is a destination that has fascinated travellers for thousands of years. From the magnificent temples lining the Nile to the bustling streets of Cairo and the crystal-clear waters of the Red Sea, it’s a country that offers far more than most people imagine.
Whether you’re passionate about ancient history, looking for a relaxing beach escape, dreaming of a luxury Nile cruise or searching for your next great adventure, Egypt has something to suit every type of traveller.
Step Back in Time
Home to some of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures, Egypt is where history comes to life. Explore magnificent temples, discover the Valley of the Kings, stand before the Great Pyramids of Giza and uncover thousands of years of civilisation that continue to captivate visitors today.
Cruise the Legendary Nile
A journey along the Nile is one of the world’s classic travel experiences. Sail between Luxor and Aswan, watch everyday life unfold along the riverbanks and visit spectacular temples that have stood for millennia. Whether you choose a luxury cruise or a traditional felucca sailing experience, the Nile offers a unique perspective on Egypt.
Beyond the Ancient Wonders
Egypt isn’t just about temples and pyramids. Venture into the vast desert landscapes of the Sahara, discover tranquil oases, or experience unforgettable sunsets across sweeping golden dunes. For those seeking adventure, the desert offers a completely different side to the country.
Relax on the Red Sea
The Red Sea resorts of Hurghada, El Gouna, Marsa Alam and Sharm El Sheikh offer beautiful beaches, luxury resorts and some of the world’s best snorkelling and diving. They’re perfect for combining with a cultural tour or simply unwinding in the sunshine.
Discover Egypt’s Vibrant Cities
Each city has its own unique character. Cairo is a fascinating blend of ancient history and modern life, where bustling markets, grand mosques and world-class museums sit alongside contemporary cafés and vibrant neighbourhoods. Alexandria offers a completely different atmosphere, with Mediterranean charm, elegant seafront promenades and a rich history shaped by many civilisations.
Warm Hospitality & Wonderful Food
One of Egypt’s greatest treasures is its people. Visitors are often welcomed with genuine warmth and hospitality, making it easy to feel at home. From freshly baked flatbreads and flavourful mezze to grilled meats, fragrant spices and traditional mint tea, Egyptian cuisine is every bit as memorable as the country’s iconic landmarks.

My Egypt Story
Egypt has stayed with me ever since I first visited in January 1996. Even after almost thirty years, I can still picture many of the moments as if they happened yesterday. It’s one of those destinations that leaves a lasting impression and has always been somewhere I’ve wanted to return to.
Luxor – My Home for Ten Days
Luxor became my home for ten unforgettable days, giving me the chance to explore at my own pace rather than rushing from one sight to another.
I stayed in a hotel right on the banks of the Nile, complete with a unique floating platform that housed the swimming pool and seating area. It became one of my favourite places to relax after a day of sightseeing, watching life unfold along the river while looking across to the West Bank and reflecting on the incredible places I’d explored earlier that day.
One of the joys of staying in Luxor was being able to wander along the Corniche whenever I wanted. From there I could walk to Karnak Temple or continue on to Luxor Temple, soaking up the atmosphere as I went.
Back then, the magnificent Avenue of Sphinxes that once connected the two temples was still hidden beneath the city. It wasn’t until 2021 that this remarkable ceremonial route reopened after decades of excavation and restoration. It’s one of the many reasons I’d love to return and experience Luxor all over again.
Crossing the Nile by Felucca
One of my favourite memories was crossing the Nile aboard a traditional felucca.
There was something wonderfully peaceful about gliding silently across the water under sail. It wasn’t simply a way of getting from one bank to the other—it felt like stepping back in time and seeing Egypt much as travellers have for centuries.

Exploring the Valley of the Kings & Queens
Visiting the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens was an experience I’ll never forget.
Getting there was part of the adventure. The felucca captain’s cousin happened to be the taxi driver… and several of the shopkeepers also seemed to be cousins! 🤣 Looking back, it was all part of the wonderful cultural experience and something that still makes me smile today.
Walking through the valley with ancient tombs carved into the hillsides was simply incredible. What amazed me most was how vibrant many of the wall paintings remained after thousands of years. The colours were far brighter than I’d ever imagined.
Since my visit, archaeologists have continued to uncover new tombs while others have been carefully restored and reopened, meaning there’s even more to discover today than there was in 1996.

I also remember riding a camel through the sugar cane fields… although my camel seemed far more interested in stopping for snacks from the trees than giving me a comfortable ride! It’s a memory that still makes me laugh, even if I wasn’t laughing quite so much at the time.
My Nile Cruise
After ten wonderful days in Luxor, it was time for the next adventure.
An early morning journey took us to Aswan, where we boarded our Nile cruise ship for four unforgettable nights sailing back towards Luxor.
Watching everyday life unfold along the river while visiting magnificent temples along the way remains one of the most memorable journeys I’ve ever experienced. There’s something special about seeing Egypt from the water—it gives you a completely different perspective on the country and its history.
Why I Want to Return
Although my trip was unforgettable, I still feel as though there’s another chapter waiting to be written.
One thing I’ve always regretted is not visiting Cairo and standing in front of the Great Pyramids of Giza. They’re among the world’s most iconic landmarks, yet somehow they’re still on my own travel wishlist.
I’d also love to explore the Grand Egyptian Museum. Museums have always fascinated me, and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the museum in Luxor during my trip. The Grand Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world’s greatest collections of ancient Egyptian treasures, is another reason Egypt has remained firmly on my list of places to revisit.
Perhaps it’s time to return and continue the journey that began all those years ago.
Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning to discover more, Egypt offers far more than many people realise. Here are just a few of the places that make this remarkable country so special.
