Athens – Where Ancient History Meets Modern Life

My Athens Story

My first visit to Athens was back in 1996 when I spent two wonderful weeks on the nearby island of Aegina. During my stay, I made several trips across to Athens to explore some of its most famous landmarks, including the magnificent Acropolis and the Panathenaic Stadium, home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Standing amongst such incredible history was something I’ll never forget.

Thirty years later, I returned to Athens in 2026 while attending a travel conference. It was wonderful to experience the city again with fresh eyes. I stayed at the Brown Acropol Hotel, close to Omonia Square, and spent my free time rediscovering Athens aboard the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus. It reminded me just how much there is to see beyond the city’s famous ancient sites.

Before flying home, I couldn’t resist returning to Aegina. I caught the train to the port of Piraeus before taking the ferry for a nostalgic day trip back to the island where my Greek adventures first began. It was a lovely way to finish the journey and brought back so many happy memories.

Athens is one of those cities that rewards repeat visits. Every time I’ve returned, I’ve discovered something new, whether that’s a hidden café, a beautiful rooftop view or another fascinating chapter of its remarkable history. For me, it’s a city that perfectly combines ancient wonders with contemporary Greek life, making it a destination I would happily visit again and again.
