Travelling by train is one of the best ways to see Austria. Comfortable services connect Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz, Linz and Klagenfurt, while regional trains reach many of the country’s smaller destinations. The journey itself can be part of the experience, with spectacular Alpine scenery along several routes.
🏔️ Scenic rail journeys
Austria is particularly rewarding for rail enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys spectacular landscapes. Routes through the Alps combine comfortable travel with mountains, valleys, lakes and picturesque villages. It’s an ideal way to slow down and enjoy the scenery rather than concentrating on driving.
🚌 Buses & mountain transport
Buses extend the rail network into Alpine valleys and mountain resorts, making places such as Bad Gastein, Zell am See and many Tyrolean villages accessible without a car. Cable cars and mountain lifts then open up the higher Alpine areas for hiking, sightseeing and winter sports.
🚗 By car
A car can be useful if you want to explore remote villages, smaller lakes and countryside at your own pace, particularly in rural Alpine regions. However, it’s not essential for many popular itineraries.
✈️ Flying into Austria
For international visitors, Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck are the main airports to consider, depending on your itinerary. Vienna works particularly well for city breaks and eastern Austria, while Salzburg and Innsbruck are convenient gateways to the Alps.

Austria works particularly well as a multi-centre holiday, combining cities with mountains and smaller resorts. You could, for example, travel Vienna → Salzburg → Zell am See → Bad Gastein → Innsbruck, using the train for much of the journey.
