Azores Thermal Baths & Hot Springs

The volcanic origins of the Azores have created something rather special — naturally heated thermal waters surrounded by some of São Miguel’s most beautiful scenery.

I experienced the thermal baths as part of a tour around the island, and they were a wonderful addition to a day spent exploring the Azores. After discovering volcanic landscapes, lush forests and dramatic scenery, there was something particularly relaxing about slowing down and experiencing the island’s geothermal waters.

From the lush surroundings of Caldeira Velha to the thermal pools around Furnas, São Miguel offers several opportunities to experience its volcanic heritage in a completely different way.

What I particularly love about the Azores is that the thermal experience doesn’t need to be the sole purpose of your trip. It can be naturally woven into an island adventure — exploring during the day, then taking time to relax in warm volcanic waters.

Come and discover the thermal side of the Azores — where volcanic activity, nature and relaxation meet.

Azores Thermal Baths & Hot Springs

One of my favourite experiences in the Azores was visiting the Poça da Dona Beija thermal baths in Furnas as part of my tour of São Miguel.

Set among lush greenery, giant ferns and steaming volcanic waters, the thermal pools are naturally heated by the volcanic activity beneath the island. I remember the pools having different temperatures, so you could start with one of the cooler pools and gradually work your way up to the warmer waters. It made the experience feel almost like your own little thermal-water journey.

Surrounded by all that greenery and with steam rising through the trees, it was a wonderfully relaxing experience — and something completely different from simply sightseeing.

It’s one of those Azores experiences where you don’t just see the island’s volcanic nature; you get to experience it. ♨️🌿
