🌙 What is Antarctic camping?
This isn’t traditional camping — and that’s rather the point.
Antarctic camping is an overnight expedition experience, giving you the rare opportunity to spend several hours immersed in the landscape rather than simply visiting it during the day.
After dinner aboard your ship, you’ll travel ashore by Zodiac with the expedition team. A designated camping area will have been carefully prepared, and you’ll receive a briefing on how to make the most of your night in this unique environment.
Then it’s time to settle in.
Choose your spot within the designated camping area, prepare your sleeping system and get ready for a night unlike any other.
🛶 Leaving the ship behind
There is something wonderfully exciting about stepping into a Zodiac knowing that you won’t be returning to the ship until morning.
As you travel towards the shore, the ship gradually disappears behind you and the scale of Antarctica begins to take over.
Once ashore, the expedition team will establish a safe camping area on suitable snow-covered ground. You’ll then have the opportunity to get yourself comfortable and take in your surroundings before settling down for the night.
No traffic.
No city lights.
No hotel corridor outside your door.
Just Antarctica.
⭐ A night like no other
As evening settles over the Antarctic Peninsula, the landscape can take on an entirely different character.
Depending on the season and conditions, you may find yourself surrounded by an extraordinary combination of snow, ice, mountains and ocean beneath an ever-changing sky.
Listen carefully and you may hear the calls of penguins or the sounds of wildlife somewhere beyond your immediate surroundings.
And while you might be tempted to stay awake all night simply taking it all in, eventually you’ll need to crawl into your sleeping bag.
Then comes the strange and wonderful thought:
You’re actually sleeping in Antarctica.
🐧 What might you see?
Antarctica is one of the world’s great wildlife destinations, and your camping experience takes place right in the middle of this remarkable environment.
Depending on your location, season and the behaviour of the wildlife, you may encounter:

- 🧊 Icebergs and sea ice
- 🏔️ Snow-covered mountains
- ❄️ Glaciers and dramatic Antarctic landscapes
Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed, of course, and the animals always come first. Antarctic expedition teams follow strict guidelines designed to protect the environment and minimise disturbance to wildlife.
But that’s part of the magic.
You never quite know what Antarctica might have waiting for you.
⛺ What do you actually sleep in?
Forget the idea of pitching a conventional tent and building a campfire.
Your overnight accommodation is designed specifically for an Antarctic expedition.
You’ll be provided with a warm mummy-style sleeping bag, insulated sleeping pad and bivy sack, giving you protection from the elements while keeping the experience as close to the environment as possible.
Tents may also be available on request, subject to availability.
You’ll also have access to expedition clothing and equipment designed for the conditions, including an insulated parka and waterproof insulated boots.
And that pillow you’ve forgotten?
Your rolled-up parka can do the job. 😉
🎒 What should you take?
You’ll receive specialist equipment as part of the experience, but you’ll also want to bring suitable personal clothing and essentials.
Think:
- Warm base and mid-layers
- Hat and gloves
- Hand warmers
- Personal medication
- A small backpack
- Your camera and spare batteries
- An eye mask if you’d prefer complete darkness
And don’t worry about packing a camping pillow.
Antarctica has other priorities. Your parka will do nicely.

Let’s be honest — this isn’t luxury camping.
There is no ensuite bathroom, no room service and no comfortable bed waiting for you.
Facilities are deliberately limited and you’ll be spending the night exposed to the Antarctic environment.

You’ll be briefed by the expedition team, provided with the appropriate equipment and supported throughout the experience.
