Travel through China by high-speed and regional trains before crossing into Mongolia aboard the Trans-Mongolian Railway. Along the way, discover ancient cities, the Great Wall, remote grasslands, desert landscapes and traditional nomadic life.
The wildlife highlights are particularly special. Visit an Ewenki reindeer camp in Inner Mongolia, search for free-roaming wild horses in Khustai National Park, and keep your eyes on the skies for golden eagles, falcons and vultures.

This is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for something beyond the usual wildlife itinerary.
In Ulan Butong, visit the reindeer camp of the Ewenki people and learn about their traditional way of life and relationship with the animals. The camp operates seasonally, with the Ewenki people living there during the warmer months, although visits and learning experiences continue outside that period.
Continue into the vast landscapes of Inner Mongolia, travelling through forests, grasslands and sandy desert. At Gongge’er Grasslands, there’s the chance to spot wild deer, while the surrounding scenery provides an incredible setting for photography and wildlife watching.
Then, in Mongolia, spend time in Khustai National Park, where a leader-led hike offers the chance to see Przewalski’s wild horses roaming freely and spot golden eagles, falcons and vultures overhead.
🚂 The ultimate rail adventure
Rail travel is at the heart of the journey.
Start with China’s impressive bullet trains, travelling between Shanghai, Wuxi, Xi’an, Beijing and Chengde, before boarding the Trans-Mongolian Railway to cross the China–Mongolia border. Later, experience an overnight train journey towards Ulaanbaatar.
It’s a brilliant way to watch the landscape transform from bustling cities and ancient Chinese sites to seemingly endless grasslands, desert and the Gobi.
