🇨🇴 Colombia earthquake – what does it mean for travellers?

On 10 August 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with the epicentre near San JosĂŠ del Palmar in ChocĂł. The earthquake affected communities across a wide area of the country, with the humanitarian response and recovery continuing. 

The Coffee Region was among the areas affected, including Salento and the surrounding QuindĂ­o region. Importantly for visitors, the impact on tourism has been considerably less than the overall humanitarian impact. More than 90% of the tourist attractions affected in the region had reopened by late August, and Salento and other destinations were working to welcome visitors again. 

Airports in the region have also been progressively returning to normal operations, although travellers should check their individual flight and onward travel arrangements before departure. 

For anyone considering a trip to Colombia, this means the country has not simply “closed” to tourism. Some areas continue to recover and individual routes may need to be adjusted, but many of Colombia’s major tourist destinations and attractions remain accessible.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office currently advises against all but essential travel to specific areas of Colombia, rather than the country as a whole. Its current advice also notes that a humanitarian response remains underway in the earthquake-affected areas. 

🐸 What does this mean for Café Colombia?

For the CafĂŠ Colombia small-group tour, this is something that needs to be monitored closely rather than automatically ruling out the trip. The itinerary includes Salento and the Cocora Valley, in the Coffee Region, so the situation there is particularly relevant.
