Croatia – A Country I Can’t Wait to Explore Even More
My journey through the Balkans began in Croatia, making it a destination that will always hold a special place in my travel memories.
I first arrived in Split in 2016, and it’s a city I’ll never forget. Landing in the evening, I was greeted by the sparkling Adriatic Sea and the lights of the old town reflecting across the waterfront – a spectacular introduction to both Croatia and the Balkans. My stay was only brief as I continued my adventure through the region, but it was enough to leave me wanting to return.
Later on that same trip, I also spent an afternoon exploring the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik while travelling from Bar in Montenegro to Lake Bled in Slovenia. Although my visit was short, wandering the historic streets and admiring the stunning coastline made it easy to see why Dubrovnik is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

I returned to Croatia in 2017 to discover even more of this incredible country. This time my journey began in Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage town that’s even closer to Split Airport than Split itself. With its maze of narrow stone streets, charming waterfront and relaxed atmosphere, it was the perfect place to start.
From there I travelled north to Zagreb, Croatia’s welcoming capital, before continuing on to the colourful harbour town of Rovinj and the historic city of Pula. Pula’s remarkably well-preserved Roman Amphitheatre was one of the highlights of my trip. In fact, one of the photographs I took there still hangs on my wall today as a reminder of just how impressive it is.
My Croatian adventure also took me to Rijeka, the dramatic island of Pag, the beautiful coastal city of Zadar, and the historic streets of Šibenik. Each destination had its own unique character, from Roman ruins and medieval towns to crystal-clear waters and breathtaking coastal scenery.

Despite visiting so many places, I still feel I’ve only scratched the surface of what Croatia has to offer. With over a thousand islands scattered along its spectacular Adriatic coastline, countless national parks, charming historic towns and hidden beaches waiting to be discovered, it’s a country that continues to draw me back.
Whether you’re looking for history, island hopping, stunning beaches, outdoor adventures or fantastic food, Croatia offers something for every traveller. It’s one of my favourite destinations in Europe, and I know I’ll be returning again to discover even more of this remarkable country.

Discover Split, a vibrant coastal city where ancient Roman history meets the relaxed atmosphere of the Adriatic. At its heart lies Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose ancient walls now form part of a living city filled with narrow lanes, hidden courtyards, cafés and restaurants. Wander along the palm-lined Riva waterfront, explore the historic old town and climb Marjan Hill for beautiful views across the city and sea.
Split is also an excellent base for exploring Croatia’s islands and coastline. Regular ferry and catamaran services connect the city with popular islands including Hvar, Brač, Vis and Šolta, making island-hopping an appealing addition to your holiday. Spend time swimming in clear waters, exploring picturesque harbours, discovering quieter coves or enjoying the distinctive character of each island.
Beyond the coast, venture inland to explore the waterfalls and walking trails of Krka National Park, discover the historic town of Trogir or experience the dramatic landscapes of the Cetina River, where rafting, canyoning and other outdoor adventures await.
Whether you choose a city break, an island-hopping escape or a longer Adriatic adventure, Split offers an exciting combination of culture, coastline and outdoor experiences.

Few destinations capture the imagination quite like Dubrovnik. Known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, this spectacular coastal city is famed for its imposing medieval walls, terracotta rooftops and dazzling views over the deep blue sea. Step inside the historic old town to discover polished limestone streets, ornate churches, elegant squares and atmospheric lanes that reveal centuries of maritime history.
For fans of Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik is particularly special. The city served as a major filming location for King’s Landing, with recognisable settings including the city walls, Fort Lovrijenac and parts of the old town. Guided filming-location tours bring the fantasy world to life while also revealing the real history behind these remarkable locations.
Dubrovnik is equally appealing beyond its famous landmarks. Walk the city walls for panoramic coastal views, take the cable car up Mount Srđ or relax at a waterfront café. Boat trips provide easy access to nearby Lokrum Island, known for its botanical gardens, walking paths and swimming spots, while the Elaphiti Islands offer opportunities for beach-hopping, kayaking and exploring peaceful coastal villages.
For a wider adventure, Dubrovnik can also be a starting point for excursions to the Pelješac Peninsula, renowned for its coastal scenery and historic settlements, or cross-border trips to Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Depending on your plans, the region offers opportunities to discover places such as the Bay of Kotor or Mostar, adding another country or culture to your Croatian holiday.
Discover Dubrovnik: Perfect for history enthusiasts, Game of Thrones fans, island excursions and travellers seeking a memorable blend of medieval charm and Mediterranean scenery.

Combine Split or Dubrovnik with island escapes, from Hvar’s lively harbour to Brač’s famous Zlatni Rat beach and the quieter landscapes of Vis. Ferry routes and seasonal services vary, so the best itinerary depends on your travel dates.

Extend your trip with a journey into neighbouring Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Bay of Kotor and historic Mostar offer a change of scenery, architecture and culture within a wider Balkan adventure.

Explore Dubrovnik’s famous filming locations with a guided tour or discover them independently. It’s a fun way to experience the old town while seeing the real-world settings behind King’s Landing.
