So… what exactly is Downtown?

When you hear Downtown Las Vegas, think of it as the original heart of Las Vegas — a different part of the city from the famous Las Vegas Strip.

The Strip and Downtown are not the same place, and they’re not really next door to each other either. Downtown is further north, centred around Fremont Street, and has a very different character.

This is where you’ll find old-school Vegas, colourful neon signs, casinos, bars, restaurants, live music and the famous covered Fremont Street Experience.

✨ What’s there?

Fremont Street Experience is the big attraction. It’s a pedestrianised area beneath an enormous LED canopy, with spectacular light shows, music and entertainment overhead.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s the SlotZilla Zipline, which sends you flying above Fremont Street. 😳

Away from Fremont Street, Downtown has become a really interesting mix of old and new — independent restaurants and bars, quirky shops, art, live entertainment and some of the city’s historic casinos.

It’s also home to some wonderfully retro Vegas hotels, so if you like character and history rather than huge modern resorts, Downtown is worth a look.

🤔 Should I visit Downtown?

Yes — absolutely.

Even if you’re staying on the Strip, I’d recommend allowing at least an evening to explore Downtown.

It’s different enough from the Strip to feel like you’ve discovered another side of Las Vegas. Go after dark when the neon is glowing, the Fremont Street canopy comes alive and the atmosphere really gets going.

And you don’t need to spend hours there. An evening is enough to get a taste of it, although you could easily stay longer if you enjoy the bars, restaurants and live entertainment.

🏨 Should I stay Downtown?

It depends what you want from your Vegas holiday.

For a first-time visit, I’d generally recommend the Strip. It puts you closer to the iconic hotels, major attractions, shows, restaurants and the classic Las Vegas experience.

Downtown can be a great choice if you’re looking for:

  • 💰 Potentially better-value accommodation
  • 🎰 Historic Vegas atmosphere
  • 🎸 Live music and nightlife
  • 🍸 Independent bars and restaurants
  • ✨ A more compact, walkable entertainment area
  • 🎭 Something a little less polished and more characterful

So think of it this way:

The Strip = BIG, glamorous, spectacular Vegas.
Downtown = historic, lively, quirky Vegas.

Both are worth experiencing — they’re just very different sides of the same city.

🚕 How do I get from the Strip to Downtown?

It’s straightforward.

Taxi or rideshare: Usually the easiest option, particularly in the evening. Allow roughly 15–25 minutes, depending on exactly where you’re staying and traffic.

The Deuce: Las Vegas’ public bus service runs along the Strip and continues towards Downtown. It’s an inexpensive option and useful if you’re not in a hurry.

Driving: Easy enough, although parking and traffic can make a taxi/rideshare more appealing for an evening out.

Monorail: The Las Vegas Monorail is useful along the Strip, but it doesn’t go to Downtown. You’ll need to connect with another form of transport.

🌃 My advice?

Stay on the Strip. Visit Downtown.

For a first Vegas trip, that’s probably the best of both worlds. You get the spectacular resort experience during your stay, then head Downtown for an evening of neon, music, history and a taste of old Vegas.
