Elvis Presley: The Awards & Honours
Elvis Presley’s influence was recognised throughout his career — but his legacy didn’t end with his death in 1977.
From major music industry awards to inductions into some of the most prestigious halls of fame in the world, Elvis has continued to receive recognition decades after his death.
During His Lifetime
🏆 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award — 1971
At just 36 years old, Elvis received what was then known as the Bing Crosby Award, the forerunner of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
It recognised his outstanding contribution to recorded music and made him one of the youngest recipients of the honour.
Elvis also won three competitive Grammy Awards, all for gospel recordings:
- 1967 – Best Sacred Performance – How Great Thou Art
- 1972 – Best Inspirational Performance – He Touched Me
- 1974 – Best Inspirational Performance – How Great Thou Art (live)
Interestingly, despite his enormous success in rock and pop, all three of Elvis’s Grammy wins were for gospel music.

His death did not bring an end to the recognition of his contribution to music.
🎸 1986 – Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
Elvis became one of the first ten acts inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, when the inaugural class was inducted in 1986.
It was a fitting recognition for an artist whose music and performance style had helped define the rock & roll era.

🏆 1987 – American Music Awards Award of Merit
Elvis received the American Music Awards’ Award of Merit in 1987.
It was particularly significant because Elvis was the first recipient of the award to be honoured posthumously.

🎶 1988 – Grammy Hall of Fame
Elvis’s recording of Hound Dog was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
The Grammy Hall of Fame recognises recordings of lasting historical or qualitative significance. (Grammy)
🎶 1995 – Grammy Hall of Fame
Heartbreak Hotel followed, becoming another Elvis recording inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. (Grammy)
🤠 1998 – Country Music Hall of Fame
Elvis was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998.
Although he became known worldwide as the King of Rock & Roll, country music was one of the fundamental ingredients of his musical style.

🎶 1998 – Grammy Hall of Fame
The original 1954 recording of That’s All Right was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
This was Elvis’s first recording for Sun Records and one of the recordings that changed the course of popular music. (Grammy)
🎶 1999 – Grammy Hall of Fame
Suspicious Minds was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame, recognising the lasting significance of one of Elvis’s greatest late-career recordings.
🎤 2001 – Gospel Music Hall of Fame
In 2001, Elvis was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
This was particularly appropriate given his lifelong love of gospel music. Elvis recorded more than 50 gospel songs, and all three of his competitive Grammy wins were for gospel recordings. (Baptist Press)
The induction was also historically significant.
Elvis became the first musician to be inducted into three different major halls of fame — Rock & Roll, Country and Gospel.

More Than Music
Elvis’s legacy has also been recognised in other ways.
He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, recognising his contribution to the recording industry.
His influence has subsequently been celebrated through numerous music, entertainment and cultural honours, as well as the continued recognition of his recordings.
And perhaps one of the most remarkable facts is this:
His awards didn’t stop when he died.
Elvis died in 1977.
Yet during the following decades, his name continued to appear on the honours lists of major music institutions.
Rock & Roll. Country. Gospel.
His recordings have entered the Grammy Hall of Fame.
His influence has been recognised across several different musical genres.
And almost half a century after his death, Elvis Presley remains one of the most recognised and influential figures in popular music history.
The legacy continues…
For an artist who died at just 42, the number of honours accumulated after his death is remarkable.
And perhaps that is the most fitting tribute of all:
Elvis didn’t simply leave behind hit records. He left behind a musical legacy that continues to be recognised, studied and celebrated around the world.
