Estonia
Estonia is a destination that has long been on my travel wish list. With its beautifully preserved medieval towns, unspoilt forests, thousands of islands and reputation as one of Europe’s most innovative countries, it offers a fascinating blend of old and new. Although I haven’t had the opportunity to visit yet, it’s a country I’m very much looking forward to discovering.
The capital, Tallinn, is often regarded as one of Europe’s finest medieval cities. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is filled with cobbled streets, colourful merchant houses, impressive city walls and cosy cafés, while beyond the historic centre you’ll find a modern, forward-thinking city renowned for its technology, culture and excellent food scene.
Beyond Tallinn, Estonia offers an abundance of natural beauty. Nearly half the country is covered by forests, with peaceful national parks, scenic coastline and more than 2,000 islands providing endless opportunities for walking, wildlife watching and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re exploring historic manor houses, relaxing in a traditional spa town or experiencing the famous ‘white nights’ of summer, Estonia is a destination that rewards those looking to travel beyond the ordinary.
Estonia also combines perfectly with its Baltic neighbours. A journey through Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia makes for a wonderful itinerary, allowing you to experience three countries, each with its own unique character, history and culture, while travelling easily between them.
One of the most exciting combinations, however, is pairing Estonia with Finland. Frequent ferries connect Tallinn and Helsinki in just a couple of hours, making it incredibly easy to enjoy a twin-centre holiday. During the winter months, you could even continue north from Helsinki aboard the famous overnight sleeper train to Finnish Lapland, waking up surrounded by snow-covered forests and Arctic landscapes. It’s a fantastic way to combine the medieval charm of Tallinn with unforgettable winter experiences, from chasing the Northern Lights and meeting reindeer to visiting Santa Claus Village and enjoying the magic of the Arctic Circle.
