Latvia

Latvia is a destination I’ve been fortunate enough to visit twice, and it’s one I’d happily recommend to anyone looking for a fascinating European city break or as part of a wider Baltic adventure. Whether you’re planning a long weekend or combining it with neighbouring Lithuania and Estonia, Latvia offers a wonderful mix of history, culture and beautiful architecture.

Both of my visits were centred around the capital, Riga. On one trip I stayed within the heart of the Old Town, while on another I stayed just across the river. Both locations proved to be excellent choices, offering easy access to the city’s many attractions while providing different perspectives of this beautiful capital.

My first visit was packed with memorable experiences. One of the highlights was taking a relaxing cruise along the River Daugava, which offered a completely different view of Riga’s impressive skyline and historic waterfront. I had also booked a husky sledding excursion, something I was really looking forward to. Unfortunately, despite visiting in November, there wasn’t enough snow for it to go ahead. It was disappointing at the time, but it has given me another reason to return during a snowy Baltic winter.

On my second visit, I found myself on a completely different mission. I was determined to track down an incredible little illy coffee shop I had discovered in Riga’s Old Town. Thankfully I found it again, and it was every bit as good as I remembered, serving some of the most amazing cakes I’ve ever tasted. Sometimes it’s those simple travel memories that stay with you just as much as the famous sights.

Riga is a city that effortlessly blends its medieval heritage with its more recent history. As you wander through the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed Old Town, you’ll discover magnificent churches, colourful merchant houses and lively squares. Beyond the historic centre, Latvia’s Soviet and communist past is still visible in its architecture, monuments and museums, providing a fascinating insight into a period that shaped not only Latvia but much of Eastern Europe. Exploring these contrasts is one of the things that makes Riga such an interesting city to visit.

Latvia is also perfectly placed for exploring the Baltic States. Excellent road, rail and coach connections make it easy to travel between Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, allowing you to experience three unique countries on a single holiday. Whether you choose Riga as a standalone destination for a few days or as part of a longer Baltic itinerary, you’ll find a welcoming country rich in history, culture and unforgettable experiences. 🇱🇻
