Lithuania
Lithuania was my introduction to the Baltic States, and it quickly became a destination that exceeded all my expectations. My first visit was in 2015, when I flew into Vilnius before spending a couple of nights exploring the city’s beautiful Old Town, historic churches and vibrant café culture. From there I travelled by train to Kaunas, enjoying time discovering Lithuania’s second city before continuing to the coastal port of Klaipėda for a couple of nights.
Klaipėda was a real highlight. Sitting on the Baltic Sea, it offered a completely different side to Lithuania, with its maritime heritage, fresh sea air and excellent local seafood. During my stay I even seriously considered crossing into Russia, as the border with the Kaliningrad region was so close and, at that time, it was possible to do so. Instead, I spent my time enjoying the coastline and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere before taking a minibus back to Vilnius Airport for my journey home.

My second visit came a few years later as part of a travel agent educational trip. Having already planned a visit to Riga, I travelled by bus across the border into Lithuania. The journey itself was one of the highlights, offering a wonderful glimpse of the Baltic countryside with its forests, lakes and peaceful rural landscapes. It reminded me just how easy it is to combine Lithuania with its Baltic neighbours, creating a fascinating multi-country itinerary.

Lithuania is a country rich in history, culture and natural beauty. From the baroque streets of Vilnius and the creativity of Kaunas to the coastal charm of Klaipėda and the stunning Baltic coastline, it offers a wonderful variety of experiences. Although often overlooked by travellers heading elsewhere in Europe, I found Lithuania to be welcoming, affordable and full of character. It’s a destination I’d happily recommend, whether as a standalone holiday or as part of a wider journey through the Baltic States.
