Madeira

Known as the “Island of Eternal Spring,” Madeira is a lush volcanic island rising from the Atlantic Ocean, where dramatic cliffs, colourful gardens and spectacular coastal scenery combine to create one of Europe’s most beautiful island escapes.

I visited Madeira in January 1995, searching for some winter sunshine. While it wasn’t quite as warm as I had hoped—which eventually inspired future winter escapes to Egypt and Goa—it was still a welcome break from a Scottish winter and far milder than home.

I stayed in Caniço, where every day began with wonderful views across the Atlantic. The island was easy to explore, and I loved discovering its unique landscapes and charming towns. One of my favourite memories was seeing banana plantations growing alongside the roads—something I’d never experienced before. I was also captivated by the magnificent botanical gardens in Funchal, filled with exotic plants and vibrant colours. In fact, I loved them so much that I brought home Bird of Paradise flowers as a gift.

Today, Madeira is perfect for travellers looking for breathtaking scenery, year-round mild weather, spectacular walking trails, beautiful gardens, delicious local cuisine and a relaxed pace of life. Whether you’re exploring picturesque villages, admiring dramatic coastal viewpoints or simply soaking up the island atmosphere, Madeira is a destination that leaves a lasting impression.
