My Visit to North Macedonia

North Macedonia was the highlight of my second journey through the Balkans in April 2025. Travelling overland once again, I crossed the border by bus from Pristina in Kosovo to the capital, Skopje. One of the things I love most about exploring this part of Europe is how easy it is to travel between countries, watching the landscapes, cultures and history gradually change along the way.

I was immediately taken with Skopje. It’s a fascinating city where Ottoman history sits comfortably alongside modern architecture and lively public squares. The Old Bazaar quickly became one of my favourite places to explore, with its maze of cobbled streets, traditional shops, cafés and centuries-old mosques creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the Balkans. Every corner seemed to reveal another hidden courtyard or historic building, making it a wonderful city simply to wander without a plan.

After a few days in Skopje, I travelled south to Ohrid, one of North Macedonia’s true treasures. Set beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Ohrid, the town is every bit as beautiful as I’d imagined. Narrow cobbled streets wind their way through the old town, passing historic churches, traditional stone houses and inviting cafés before opening onto spectacular lake views.

My hotel overlooked the lake, and waking up each morning to that incredible view from my balcony is something I’ll never forget. Watching the sunlight reflect across one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes was the perfect way to begin each day before heading out to explore.

North Macedonia combines fascinating history, stunning scenery, welcoming people and excellent value, making it one of the Balkans’ most rewarding destinations. It may not yet attract the crowds of some neighbouring countries, but that’s part of its appeal. Whether you’re wandering the historic streets of Skopje or relaxing beside the peaceful shores of Lake Ohrid, it’s a country that leaves a lasting impression.

I left North Macedonia already knowing it wouldn’t be my last visit. The combination of rich history, spectacular scenery and genuine hospitality makes it a destination that’s easy to fall in love with.
