Discover the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. Watching vibrant ribbons of green, purple and pink dance across the Arctic sky is an unforgettable experience and one that features on many travellers’ bucket lists.

Created by charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth’s atmosphere, the Northern Lights are never quite the same twice. Some evenings they appear as a soft green glow on the horizon, while on others they explode across the sky in breathtaking waves of colour.

Although many people associate the Northern Lights with Lapland, this incredible phenomenon can be witnessed across much of the Arctic. From the dramatic fjords of Norway and the snowy forests of Finland and Sweden to the wild landscapes of Iceland, Greenland, Canada and Alaska, there are countless opportunities to experience nature’s greatest light show.

Seeing the aurora is about much more than the lights themselves. Picture yourself wrapped up beneath a star-filled sky, staying in a cosy log cabin, relaxing in a glass-roofed igloo, travelling by husky sled or snowmobile, or standing on the deck of an expedition ship as the sky comes alive overhead.

Whether you’re planning a winter escape, a once-in-a-lifetime Arctic adventure or a tailor-made journey combining several destinations, the Northern Lights provide memories that will stay with you forever.

The Best Ways to Experience the Northern Lights

There are many ways to experience the Northern Lights, and the best option depends on the type of adventure you’re looking for. Whether you dream of watching the aurora from the comfort of a luxury cabin or heading deep into the Arctic wilderness, there’s an unforgettable experience waiting for you.

Expedition & Coastal Cruises

Seeing the Northern Lights from the deck of a ship is one of the most magical experiences imaginable. Coastal voyages along Norway’s spectacular coastline and expedition cruises to Arctic destinations offer dark skies, dramatic scenery and the chance to watch the aurora dance above the sea. Many cruises also include expert guides, wildlife encounters and visits to remote communities.

Glass Igloos & Aurora Cabins

For a truly unique stay, spend the night beneath the stars in a glass igloo or an aurora cabin. Popular in Finnish Lapland, these specially designed accommodations allow you to watch the Northern Lights from the warmth and comfort of your bed. It’s a favourite choice for couples, honeymooners and anyone looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Arctic Lodges

Escape to a remote wilderness lodge surrounded by forests, mountains or frozen lakes. Far from city lights, these lodges provide excellent opportunities for aurora viewing while offering cosy accommodation, local cuisine and a peaceful atmosphere. Many also feature outdoor hot tubs or saunas, making the experience even more memorable.

Northern Lights Rail Journeys

Combine spectacular scenery with comfortable travel on one of the Arctic’s famous rail routes. Journeys through Norway and Swedish Lapland take you across snow-covered landscapes, through forests and mountains, with opportunities to stop in some of the best places to see the aurora. Rail holidays are ideal for travellers who want to explore several destinations without driving.

Winter Activity Holidays

Many Northern Lights holidays include exciting Arctic adventures during the day. Try husky sledding through snowy forests, drive a snowmobile across frozen lakes, meet reindeer and learn about Sámi culture, or enjoy snowshoeing beneath the stars. These activities make your holiday about much more than just chasing the aurora.

Self-Drive Adventures

For those who enjoy flexibility, a self-drive holiday allows you to explore at your own pace and head to areas with the clearest skies. Destinations such as Iceland, northern Norway and Finnish Lapland are well suited to winter road trips, with spectacular scenery around every corner.

City Breaks with Aurora Excursions

You don’t always have to travel deep into the wilderness. Cities such as Tromsø, Reykjavík and Rovaniemi make excellent bases, offering comfortable hotels, restaurants and attractions alongside guided evening excursions to search for the Northern Lights away from urban light pollution.

Tailor-Made Northern Lights Holidays

At Discover the Frog, we can create a holiday that’s perfectly suited to you. Whether you’d like to combine a Northern Lights cruise with a stay in a glass igloo, add a scenic rail journey, include winter activities or extend your trip to explore more of the Arctic, we’ll help design an unforgettable itinerary that maximises your chances of witnessing one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

Best Time to Visit for the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights can be seen between late September and early April, when the nights are long enough for the skies to become truly dark. While the aurora is active throughout the year, it simply isn’t visible during the Arctic summer because of the Midnight Sun. For the best chance of witnessing this incredible natural phenomenon, travel between October and March, when clear, dark nights combine with increased aurora activity. Destinations such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, Canada and Alaska all offer excellent opportunities, although the lights are never guaranteed. Spending several nights in the Arctic, away from city lights, greatly increases your chances of experiencing one of nature’s most spectacular displays.
