🇸🇰 Discover Slovakia

Slovakia is one of those Central European destinations that can easily be overlooked — and that’s exactly why I think it deserves more attention. Mountain landscapes, medieval castles, historic towns, traditional villages and fascinating underground wonders make it a wonderful destination for travellers who enjoy discovering somewhere a little different.

My own introduction to Slovakia was by train from Zakopane in Poland to Košice, making it a natural addition to a wider Central European journey. Košice has a lovely historic centre, with colourful buildings, cafés and the impressive St Elisabeth Cathedral, and it was a great way to experience a different side of the region.

I also ventured beyond the city and visited what I remember as an ice cave, surrounded by Slovakia’s beautiful mountain scenery. Slovakia is home to several remarkable caves, including the famous Dobšinská Ice Cave, where spectacular ice formations can be found underground.

And there was another memorable part of my Slovakian adventure — I bought a Slovakian rug while I was there, and I still have it today! ❤️ It’s one of those little travel memories that has stayed with me long after the trip, and a perfect reminder that sometimes the best souvenirs aren’t the things you plan to buy.

Beyond Košice, Slovakia offers plenty to discover, from Bratislava and the High Tatras to castles, caves, thermal spas, forests and charming mountain towns. It’s also incredibly well placed for combining with neighbouring Poland, Austria, Czechia and Hungary.

For me, that’s part of Slovakia’s appeal: it’s a country to explore rather than simply tick off. 🚆🏔️🐸
