🍃 Tea Country — Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s tea country is one of those landscapes that stays with you. High in the hills, emerald-green tea plantations sweep across misty mountains, with neat rows of tea bushes covering the slopes as far as you can see.

This is Ceylon Tea country — a region shaped by tea, from the plantations and historic tea estates to the small villages and workers who continue the traditions of growing and producing some of the world’s best-known tea.

One of the most memorable ways to experience it is by travelling through the hills by train. The famous journey between Kandy and Ella winds through spectacular scenery, passing tea plantations, waterfalls, forests and mountain valleys along the way.

And if you’ve ever seen tea being grown in places such as Goa, you’ll recognise some of the magic. I remember seeing tea plantations there during my travels — but Sri Lanka takes that experience to another level, with its dramatic highland scenery and deep connection to Ceylon Tea.

Spend time in a tea estate, visit a working tea factory, meet the people who produce the tea, or simply sit back with a cup while taking in the view.

This is Sri Lanka at its most peaceful — green, misty and wonderfully atmospheric. 🍃☕🇱🇰

👣 Go Beyond the View

Tea country isn’t just about taking photographs from a train window. Depending on your itinerary, you could visit a tea estate, learn about the production process, meet local people, walk through the plantations or simply enjoy a freshly brewed cup surrounded by spectacular scenery.

🚂 The Scenic Railway Journey

For many travellers, the train journey through the hill country is an essential part of the Sri Lankan experience. We can incorporate the railway into a wider itinerary, whether you’re travelling independently with arrangements made for you or as part of a guided journey.

🏡 Stay Among the Tea Plantations

Make the landscape part of your accommodation. From historic plantation properties and restored tea bungalows to boutique retreats surrounded by rolling hills, staying in tea country gives you more time to appreciate the scenery rather than simply passing through it.
