The Azores
Hidden in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores are one of Europe’s most spectacular island destinations. This Portuguese archipelago of nine volcanic islands is a paradise for nature lovers, offering emerald-green crater lakes, dramatic coastlines, waterfalls, volcanic landscapes and some of the best whale watching in the world.
My Experience
I spent a few wonderful days exploring São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, and quickly discovered why it has become one of my favourite destinations.
I joined full-day tours to both the west and east of the island, each revealing completely different landscapes. Around every corner there seemed to be another breathtaking viewpoint overlooking volcanic lakes, rugged cliffs and rolling green hills. The scenery is simply unforgettable.
One of the highlights was visiting the Gorreana Tea Plantation, the oldest tea plantation in Europe still in operation. Walking through the tea fields and sampling locally grown tea was a unique experience you simply don’t expect to find in Europe.
I also visited one of São Miguel’s famous pineapple plantations, where the fruit is grown in traditional glasshouses rather than tropical fields. It was fascinating to learn about the growing process and taste the fresh produce.
A real bucket-list experience was enjoying a traditional Cozido das Furnas. This hearty Portuguese stew is buried underground and cooked slowly for several hours using the island’s natural geothermal heat before being served in nearby restaurants. It’s a wonderful example of how the island’s volcanic landscape shapes everyday life.
Afterwards, I had the chance to relax in one of São Miguel’s famous thermal baths. Soaking in the naturally heated mineral-rich waters surrounded by lush tropical vegetation was the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Another memorable stop was the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, overlooking the spectacular twin lakes of Sete Cidades. Although now derelict, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past and offers incredible photographic opportunities. I came home with some fantastic photos from this unique location.
Why Visit the Azores?
The Azores offer a completely different side of Europe. Life moves at a slower pace, nature is always centre stage, and every day brings another spectacular viewpoint or hidden gem.
Whether you’re looking for scenic drives, volcanic landscapes, hiking, whale watching, hot springs, local food or incredible photography, the Azores have something special to offer.
For anyone who enjoys travelling beyond the ordinary, I can wholeheartedly recommend São Miguel. My visit combined dramatic scenery, fascinating local traditions, delicious food and genuine Portuguese hospitality—and it left me wanting to return to explore the other islands of this remarkable archipelago.
Combine the Azores with Mainland Portugal
One of the things I loved most about this trip was how easy it was to combine the Azores with mainland Portugal, creating a fantastic multi-centre holiday without ever leaving the country.
I began my journey in Lisbon, spending a few days exploring Portugal’s vibrant capital before flying to São Miguel in the Azores. After experiencing the volcanic landscapes, tea plantations, geothermal cooking and relaxing thermal baths, I returned to the mainland and travelled south by train to Faro in the Algarve.
It made for an incredibly varied holiday. In just one trip I experienced:

If direct flights to the Azores aren’t available from your local airport, adding a few days in mainland Portugal is an excellent alternative. It turns what might have been a short island break into an unforgettable holiday that showcases two completely different sides of Portugal.
From bustling cities and historic neighbourhoods to volcanic craters, crater lakes and Atlantic island scenery, it’s one of my favourite multi-destination itineraries—and one I’d happily recommend.
