Slovenia may be one of Europe’s smaller countries, but it packs an incredible amount into a compact space. From the emerald waters of Lake Bled and the dramatic peaks of the Julian Alps to charming medieval towns, underground caves and rolling vineyards, Slovenia is a destination that rewards those looking to travel a little differently.

I first visited Slovenia while travelling overland through the Balkans, journeying from Dubrovnik towards Venice. Although I only briefly passed through Ljubljana’s bus and railway stations on my way to Lake Bled, it was immediately clear that this was a country I wanted to explore further. Everything felt clean, relaxed and beautifully green.

I stayed in a hostel just a short walk from the shores of Lake Bled, giving me plenty of time to enjoy one of Europe’s most picturesque settings. Watching the traditional pletna boats crossing the lake, with Bled Castle perched high above and the Julian Alps providing a stunning backdrop, it’s easy to see why this is Slovenia’s most iconic destination.

Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, scenic rail journeys, charming cities, delicious local cuisine or simply somewhere to slow down and enjoy nature, Slovenia offers an unforgettable experience. Its compact size also makes it easy to combine with neighbouring Croatia, Austria or Italy, making it a fantastic addition to any European itinerary.
