Slovenia may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of European wine, but that’s part of its charm. Wine has been produced here for centuries, with vineyards scattered across rolling hills, pretty villages and countryside close to the borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.
Slovenia has three main wine-growing regions — Primorska, Podravje and Posavje — each with its own landscapes, grape varieties and character. Primorska, in western Slovenia, is particularly appealing for visitors, with vineyards stretching towards the Italian border and the Mediterranean-influenced landscapes of the Vipava Valley and Goriška Brda.

Wine has shaped the landscape and culture of Goriška Brda for generations. Vineyards sweep across the hillsides, interrupted by small villages, church towers, farmhouses and orchards, while on clear days the views can stretch towards the Alps in one direction and the Adriatic in another.
One of the prettiest places to explore is Šmartno, a tiny fortified medieval village surrounded by vineyards. Wander through its narrow streets before heading out into the surrounding countryside to discover local wineries and traditional produce.

Goriška Brda is particularly associated with Rebula, known across the border in Italy as Ribolla Gialla. You’ll also find a wide variety of other white and red wines produced by both established estates and smaller family-run wineries.
Wine tasting here isn’t simply about what’s in the glass. It’s an opportunity to meet local producers, learn about the land and discover a winemaking tradition closely connected to the landscape.

Food is an important part of the experience too. Local cheeses, cured meats, olive oil, seasonal fruit and other regional produce make Goriška Brda an excellent destination for travellers who enjoy discovering somewhere through its flavours.
