Romania

Romania was one of the biggest surprises of my travels. I visited earlier this year and discovered a country that combines elegant cities, medieval towns, spectacular mountain scenery and unforgettable wildlife experiences. It feels wonderfully authentic, with fewer crowds than many of Europe’s better-known destinations, yet offers just as much history, culture and natural beauty.

Bucharest is the perfect place for a luxury city break without the premium price tag. Romania’s capital is full of grand architecture, leafy boulevards, stylish cafés and excellent restaurants, with five-star hotels often costing a fraction of what you would expect elsewhere in Europe. I stayed in two different hotels either side of my time in Brasov, and it was an ideal way to begin and end the trip.

Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Brasov was undoubtedly one of my favourite places. Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, its colourful Old Town, medieval walls and lively squares make it a fantastic base for exploring the region. From here I visited the famous Bran Castle, forever linked with the Dracula legend, where history and myth combine to create one of Romania’s most iconic attractions.

The highlight of my journey, however, was something completely different. From Brasov I ventured into the forests to watch wild brown bears from a specially designed hide. Seeing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, quietly going about their daily lives, was an incredible experience and one I will never forget. It offered a rare opportunity to observe Europe’s largest population of brown bears in a responsible and sustainable way.

Whether you’re looking for an affordable luxury escape, fascinating history, dramatic mountain scenery or unforgettable wildlife encounters, Romania offers far more than many people expect. It’s a destination that exceeded all my expectations, and one I’d happily recommend to anyone looking to discover a different side of Europe. 🇷🇴
