Romania surprised me.
From elegant Bucharest and its grand historic buildings to the medieval streets of Transylvania, the forests and mountains of the Carpathians and the wildlife-rich landscapes beyond, this is a country with far more to discover than its famous Dracula legend suggests.
I found Romania wonderfully varied — a destination where you can combine a stylish city break with castles and charming towns, mountain adventures, wildlife experiences and fascinating history and culture.
Bucharest makes a great starting point, while heading north opens up a very different side of the country. Explore Brașov and Transylvania, venture into the Carpathians, discover Romania’s wildlife or simply slow down and enjoy the scenery, food and atmosphere.

✈️ Getting to Romania
Romania is surprisingly easy to reach from the UK, with direct flights to Bucharest from a number of UK airports, as well as a direct flight from Luton to Brasov.
I flew from Edinburgh to Bucharest on my March trip, making Bucharest an easy starting point for exploring further into Romania.
Once you’re there, the country’s rail and road networks make it possible to combine Bucharest with destinations such as Brașov and Transylvania — and I’ll help you work out the best way to connect everything together.
